History of Roncalli High School

Roncalli High School is a life-preparatory, interparochial Archdiocesan Catholic high school with an open enrollment policy. The school's tradition of service to the Indianapolis south side extends back to the early 1900's and the founding of Sacred Heart Central High School, which was renamed John F. Kennedy Memorial High School in 1966. Bishop Chartrand High School was opened in 1962 to serve the growing needs of the suburban south side Catholics. In 1969 the facilities of the two schools were merged, and a new institution was created. This new school was named Roncalli High School in honor of Cardinal Angelo Roncalli, who later took the name of Pope John XXIII.

The years since the opening of Roncalli High School have been exciting times at Roncalli - for its students, teachers, faculty and alumni. In 1997, through generous support from donors to the On This Rock Capital Campaign, Roncalli added a three-story wing, giving space to a new media center, academic offices and 13 additional classrooms, enabling the school to meet increasing enrollment demands.  Following the Building Faith and Futures Campaign, additional construction began in 2005 to expand the facilities to include a new fine arts wing and auditorium along with a new guidance facility, and greatly expanded space for our special needs resource center.

But the new and expanded facilities are only a part of the great happenings at Roncalli. In addition to facility improvements, Roncalli is continually building on its outstanding academic successes, illustrated by earning the distinguished United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award in 1993, 1998 and 2003.

Building upon Roncalli's exceptional record of excellence is a constant goal for which all at the school strive. Through an aggressive approach to the discipline of strategic planning, school leaders have focused efforts to insure that the school grows and adapts to the needs of its students and families.  We believe that we have a great blessing in the traditions of excellence established by our forbearers.  For that tradition we are thankful.  As a sign of our gratitude, we owe it to those who have gone before us to work to assure that the promise of the future is even brighter than our past.
