Roncalli Football Team

2017 Season Preview

The 2017 season is an historic one for the Roncalli football program as the Rebels move up to Class 5A as part of the IHSAA’s Success Factor. Seven starters return from an undefeated 2016 team and will be joined by many talented newcomers. Offensively, Roncalli will be led by returning starters Jacob Leudeman (Sr.) at receiver and Christian Walker (Sr.) at guard. Joining Walker on the offensive line is Dominic Clouse (Sr.) who moves over to the offense after starting all 15 games on the defensive line last season.

The quarterback position will be manned by Conner Gore (Sr.), a three-sport Rebel athlete. He will be joined by junior Alex Volk. At running back, senior Patrick McManama, who was a major contributor in 2016, returns along with Hunter Miller (Sr.), Elijah Mahan (Jr.) and Andtrew Lockard (Jr.). The Rebel receivers are a deep group led by Luedeman. Joining him are the speedy Michael Dill (Sr.), Murphy McManama (Sr.), Luke Dill (Jr.), Jackson Annee (Sr.), Luke Parrett (Sr.), Myles Lyngh (Sr.), and Nick Johnson (Jr.). Up front, Walker and Clouse will be alongside Nate O’Mara (Sr.), Andrew Shelby (Sr.), Sean Hornek (Sr.), Joe Mullin (Jr.), Simon Dias (Jr.), Robbie Butts (Jr.), Conner DeMoss (Jr.), Clayton Shura (Jr.) and Daniel Heinrich (Soph.) to make up a formidable offensive line. Seniors Hayden Moran and Luke Tippett bring versatility to the fullback position.

Defensively, Cade Morgan (Sr.) returns to his linebacker position after an all-state season in 2016 that saw him collect 150 tackles. Returning starter Jones Asher (Sr.) and letterwinner Luke Hanley (Sr.) makeup an experienced and talented linebacking corps that will also see Jack Baker (Sr.), Tom Hodge (Jr.), Matt Waugh (Jr.), and David Clayton (Soph.) compete for playing time. The defensive line is also blessed with depth and experience. Tony Schott (Sr.), Conley Jones (Sr.), and John Harris (Jr.) were all key cogs last season. Luke Keller (Sr.), Tyler Muse (Jr.), Ethan Lockard (Jr.), Jerzy Pawlak (Jr.), and Drew Strader (Jr.) all hope to see time as well. The Rebel secondary will see many new faces. Sam Sedgwick (Sr.) returns with the most amount of experience at safety. He will be joined by Ethan Newett (Sr.), Brandon Berger (Jr.), Gavin Snyder (Jr.), Patrick Cherry (Jr.), and Tyler Newett (Soph.). At corner, Dylan Williams (Sr.) returns as a starter and Cam Fath (Sr.) saw extensive time in 2016. Pete Baker (Sr.), Mark Cobb (Sr.), Jacob Denney (Jr.), Dylan Lewis (Jr.), and Brandon White (Jr.) will all compete for playing time as well.

Senior Merrick Strykowski will handle the placekicking duties, while fellow senior Michael Dill will serve as the punter. The strong 2017 schedule features Circle City Conference opponents Bishop Chatard, Brebeuf Jesuit and Guerin Catholic as well as 6A opponents Southport, Franklin Central and Fishers. Fellow Sectional 13 rivals Plainfield and Decatur Central are also part of the regular schedule as the Rebels transition to a new sectional alignment that also features Arsenal Tech and Cathedral as potential matchups in postseason play.
