Boys Track and Field

2017 Season Review

The boys’ track team performed its best in the biggest meets of the year. The squad captured the team titles at the Archdiocesan Championship and the inaugural Circle City Conference Championship. At the conference meet, the Rebels won individual titles in eight of the 16 events. At the sectional, the team finished third, which tied its best finish since 2003. The Rebels had an individual sectional champion, three runners-up and 11 regional qualifiers. At the regional, the Rebels had an individual champion and two additional state qualifiers. This season’s track team numbered nearly 100 athletes, which is the largest team in program history.

Senior Gabe Otley qualified for regional in the 400 meters with a third-place finish in sectional, before winning the regional the following week. He is the team’s first regional champion since 2012. His regional title put him in the state final, where he ran a career-best 49.80 and finished 13th. Otley’s performance at the state final earned him a spot on the Indiana All-Star track team, becoming the first athlete in program history to be named to the team. Sophomore Nick Perkins won the sectional 3200-meter title for the program’s only sectional title in 2017. The following week, he finished third at regional and became the program’s first-ever state qualifier in the 3200 meters. Senior Will English advanced through the postseason to qualify for the state final in the discus.

Gabe Otley earned the team’s MVP award. Senior Kurt Cunningham won the team’s mental attitude award. Sophomore Grant Latimer was named the most improved athlete. Owen Herndon was the freshman MVP.
